Help for Trump’s Rosacea and Yours Too

On February 1, 2017, the New York Times reported long time Trump doctor, Dr. Harold N. Bornstein reported that President Trump takes “antibiotics to control rosacea, a common skin problem”.

In the phone interviews conducted by the New York Times, Dr. Bornstein said “he refilled Mr. Trump’s prescriptions for a long-acting tetracycline, a common antibiotic, to control rosacea. The skin ailment can cause easy blushing or flushing with visible blood vessels. It also can spread over the face, and sometimes the chest and back. In different forms it can resemble acne and cause bumps”.

While Dr. Bornstein is an internal medicine physician, I could help President Trump with his rosacea without the side effects of antibiotics.

All drugs have side effects. The most common side effect of long term use of antibiotics is bacterial antibiotic resistance. This means that your body becomes resistant to killing the bad bacteria that can cause illness. Antibiotics kill both the good and the bad bacteria in our bodies. Even after a normal dose (7 to 10 days) of an antibiotic the good bacteria in the gut has been killed. A strong dose of probiotics is in order after even one dose of antibiotics to restore the balance of bacteria in the gut. In fact, my friend from South Africa tells me the doctors in South Africa routinely prescribe both an antibiotic and a probiotic at the same time.

A study published in the journal Gut, by researchers at Oregon State University, has found that antibiotics impact the natural microorganisms in the gut – in a much more complex and comprehensive manner than originally realized. The study confirms that profound harm can come to the immune system’s function via the gut from the use of antibiotics.

Rosacea is a chronic condition that appears primarily on the cheeks and nose and is characterized by redness and dilated surface blood vessels. The cause of rosacea is unknown. It may appear because of heredity, mites, or fungus, or bacteria, which cause some doctors to prescribe antibiotics.

We do not know the cause of rosacea but we do know what makes the condition worse. Spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, heat, sun, and stress can all make the redness of the facial skin worse. President Trump does not drink alcohol or caffeine, so I would eliminate those causing more redness. My professional opinion, in President Trump’s case, is the main contributing factor of his rosacea is stress.

You can think of rosacea as a vascular condition. Any situation or event that would expand the blood vessels will increase the redness of the face. In my skincare clinic, my clients experience alcohol as the number one contributor. The media tells us red wine is good for our heart health; therefore, my clients over indulge with red wine causing the blood vessels to dilate and redness in the skin appears.

Because so many of my clients experience rosacea or redness in the cheeks and nose, I give healing recommendations in my book. People with this condition must learn how to manage it in a healthy, non-toxic way that promotes healthy skin. These recommendation are not only beneficial for individuals suffering from rosacea but will lead to healthy skin in general.

Internally, I would recommend taking a probiotic supplement. Make sure the probiotic supplement you consume is of medical grade and includes multiple strains of bacteria. Most important is the quality and “freshness” of the probiotic. The goal is for the live cultures to make it to your intestines still alive. You should protect the supplement from light, heat, and moisture. Don’t buy a probiotic that has been sitting on the shelf forever. Check the expiration date and don’t choose your probiotic based on price.

In addition to taking a supplement, eat probiotic foods. The most popular food source of probiotics is yogurt. Again, be careful of the yogurt you choose. All yogurts are not the same. Read the label before you buy. If it contains any added sugar – don’t buy it. Sugar increases inflammation making rosacea and skin redness worse instead of better.

I also include keifer in my diet. Keifer is in between milk and yogurt. It is thicker than milk but not as thick as yogurt. It is easy to use like milk on oatmeal or cereal. Again, read the label for added sugar. If you buy a flavored keifer, it probably has added sugar. As with all milk products, make sure the cows have not been fed antibiotics!

Externally, avoid skin care products with chemicals. Harsh chemicals will aggravate the redness of the skin. My favorite healing products for rosacea all contain rose oil. I prescribe moisturizer or night time oil that contains rose oil to calm the redness of the skin. Stay away from facial scrubs. No scrubbing allowed! If you want to safely exfoliate your skin, use a glycolic lotion (no more than 5%). You can leave the lotion on overnight and simply wash with a light cleanser in the morning.

I am so thankful to live in a time where we have the power of antibiotics are our disposal. They are powerful drugs to heal illness and disease. But, for them to do their job when we need them, we cannot overuse them to the point where our bodies are so used to them they cannot fight the very bacteria we need them to. Every drug has a side effect! Taking care of your body, and your skin, in a natural way is always the best long term solution.
